Helping with Reading and Writing
Creating a positive attitude towards literacy
Create a Reading Corner in your house:
• Cosy quiet place separated from hustle and bustle of classroom.
• Make sure that books can be easily reached (not high up on a bookshelf!)
• Supply your child with a variety of reading material:
• Age appropriate storybooks
• Non-fiction books (insects, machines)
• Wordless books
• Children’s magazines
• Catalogues (Argos)
• Books made by children and teachers
• Taped books
• Travel brochures
• Poetry / nursery rhymes
Create a Writing Corner in your house (e.g. table / shelf):
• Chalkboard with coloured chalk
• Magnetic letters
• Cards, postcards, notepaper
• Unlined and lined paper (different colours, sizes, shapes, textures)
• Stapled paper books (story writing)
• Old Typewriter/computer
• Markers, pencils, crayons, pens
• Stamps, envelopes
• Ink stamp, tape, stapler, glue, scissors
