Keep on Pushing those Pedals
Since we posted the item on the "lose the wheels" training programme and Buddy Bikes, we have a had a few other company's contact to let us know about other products that have been designed to improve mobility options for children and people with disability.
US company Power Pumper, based in Oregon, are the inventors of a four wheel children's car which uses a backwards/forwards hand-operated lever or pump to generate momentum - reminiscent of the old railway cars that appeared in countless silent movies.
Indeed, the inventor based its engineering on the railway car, and its simple function requires the child to push with the feet while pulling the lever with the hands to make the car move. With its brightly coloured body and easy to use mechanism, it's an item that all children would fight to be the first to have a go on.
But it's great benefit is that it's low center of gravity and easy access close to the ground provides a feeling of security for children. It promotes the co-ordination of both upper and lower body movement and even children with severe special needs can manage to operate the Power Pumper. Instead of dealing with the frustration of having to goad children to do therapy and exercises, parents and therapists report that it is difficult to get them to stop because they enjoy the Power Pumper so much.
It's yet another option that could provide a child with a greater sense of independence and self esteem - www.powerpumper.com and it's no surprise that the power pumper is being propelled up hospital and treatment centre corridors throughout the US.
Another company to contact us were a UK company called www.quest88.com. They are recognised as a leader in the design and development of activity based therapy products for all ages. Their range of cycling products includes children's trikes, companion cycles and recumbent cycles all of which offer a huge range of options for people of all ages in enjoying the art of bicycling.
So much is possible when you you know where to look!
