A World View of Down syndrome -Sprout Film Festival
This week's View focuses on the work of Sprout, a NYC-based non-profit organization, dedicated to bringing innovative programming to people with developmental disabilities. Sprout has been making videos related to the field of developmental disabilities filmed by and featuring people with intellectual disability since 1995.
In 2003 they launched the Sprout Film Festival showcasing films which reinforce accurate portrayals of people with developmental disabilities and expose important issues facing this population. The goal is an enjoyable and enlightening experience that they hope will help to breakdown stereotypes, promoting a greater acceptance of differences and awareness of similarities.
The video 'Jimmy' which we feature today - with music by Radiohead - speaks volumes about the way people with Down syndrome are stereotyped by society. We see two happy boys. However one has Down syndrome and one has not. Which one did you assume led the privileged lifestyle?
The discovery causes an instant repositioning of sympathies and the realisation that there are far worse prospects facing children in this world than being born with a developmental disability. Pity the millions of children in this world who will wake up tomorrow on the streets, hungry and alone. By comparison, children who merely have to deal with having Down syndrome, are kings.
