Dancing with Down syndrome
In 2005, Israeli dance choreographer, Daniel Vais, found himself far away from home in the Irish town of Limerick, with spare time on his hands and agreed to give a few informal dance classes to a group of students with Down syndrome, in the local community centre.
Amazed and inspired by the talent, tenacity, individuality and humour of his students, Daniel embarked on a project to overturn basic assumptions about the limitations of the intellectually disabled, through dance.
Almost three years later, what was started as a casual dance class has become a troupe called, The Love Spotters, the first ever professional dance company comprised entirely of people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. The group's first full length piece Cataplasia, was performed throughout 2007 in festivals throughout Ireland and Europe London, Frankfurt, Dublin, Cork, Omagh and Belfast to great acclaim. The Irish Times remarked, "Daniel Vais and the Love Spotters create happiness" and the Guardian spoke of Cataplasia as an "Enchanting dance performance".
Daniel is planning to continue his work with Down syndrome associations in Los Angeles, Hawaii, UK and Israel.
His work demonstrates the power of art to transform and give meaning in people's lives and this is something that is also being applied by the AMAR Association in Argentina who teach the tango to people with Down syndrome.
Headed up by instructor, Robert Rodriguez, he explains, "the average person would need a year to reach a certain level. However , my pupils need about 10 years to learn to Tango well, as many have motor system and hearing problems while others have difficulty in making themselves understood".
However, four advanced couples from his class have formed a dance group that has already toured the whole of Argentina. Rodrieguez Robert reports that, "People in the audience are often moved to tears. Most people assume that people with Down syndrome are incapable of doing anything. However, the dancer's performances prove this assumption wrong".
This looks great, do you know where we can see Daniel and the dancers perform?

I have seen this website and would like to say I was to minor extent involved in the first production of this dance troup and thought the performance one of the most moving theatrical experiences of my life.
