Down Syndrome Performance Group

This week our attention was caught by a group of performing artists, called Company d. Based in Memphis, Tennessee the 13 strong troupe of young adults (aged 16-18) with Down syndrome came together seven years ago after they performed together at the 15th anniversary of another non-profit group. That evening was such a success that both dancers and parents wanted to see the fun continue, and so it did.

Rehearsing twice weekly, Company d participate annually in a mini-winter camp and a summer camp, where they receive instruction under guest artists in dance, theatre and the visual arts. The members of Company d sign annual contracts of commitment to the programme. The reaction from all involved has been nothing but positive. The dancers love the inspirational friendships they have made and the comrade of the group. Their parents enjoy seeing the dancers commit to something they love doing and to see the dedication and discipline it has brought to their lives. They all agree that it is a good thing to see the dancers take ownership in their actions, and will do their best to support their children. ‘Whatever it takes’, is the motto that bonds them.

Last September, the dancers took a four day trip to New York. The dancers who always wanted to perform publically at a national level were invited by Luigi Jazz Centre to perform at the Dicapo Opera Theatre. All involved were overwhelmed with the performance in front of a New York audience. In the following days the dancers took classes with Luigi, the father of jazz dance and Francis J. Roach, choreographer and world renowned teacher. The dancers took the classes with a varied group of dance students and professionals. In one of the sessions Liza Minnelli, herself a student of Luigi, joined in the class. Company d were asked to perform a piece for Liza, and she in turn sang and danced New York New York for the class – a real treat for all!

Absolutely wonderful,
My daughter has down syndrome and has been dancing for 15 years in a regular dance class with her peers! she loves it. check out her video.
