Of interest to Parents of a Child with Disability
We have been contacted by author, Margaret Barrett, to tell us of her book "You And Your Disabled Child" - which she believes may of interest to parents who have been told that their child is likely to suffer from some sort of disability or developmental delay.
Explaining in greater detail, Margaret tell us, "This could be soon after the birth, when attending for check ups or assessments during the early months and years of the child’s life or following an illness or traumatic injury. The aim of the book is to guide members of the family through what is inevitably a stressful and confusing time, to help them establish routines, procedures and frames of mind which will encourage the child’s development and - maybe most importantly - to encourage them to focus on the positive aspects of the child rather than becoming overwhelmed by the disablilty so that they can enjoy the experience of being parents and not miss out on the precious childhood years, which can never be replaced".
Central to her theme is the idea that disabled children should be treated, as far as their disabilities will allow, in exactly the same way as their able-bodied siblings, in order to help them achieve their maximum potential and become as independent as possible.
Margaret - a healthcare professional with many years experience of working with children with disability -offers a number of workable recommendations as to how this may be achieved, as well as advising how to overcome commonly held misconceptions and prejudices about children with disabilities that are likely to be encountered in the world at large.
Her book also explains why it is vitally important that parents avoid the all too common mistake of being over-protective, thus unintentionally denying their offspring valuable opportunities to experience new sensations, acquire new skills and maximise their potential.
Written in straight-forward language in an easy-going and friendly style, this very useful book achieves its objective to help parents of physcially and mentally challenged children to get the most out of life.
