Clinical Groups – September to December 2019

Parents are invited to register their interest in their child participating in the following groups by emailing info@downsyndromecentre.ie or calling 01 661 8000. Please note closing date for registering is Thursday 11th July.

Stepping Stones Play & Learn Group

Participants:

4 children accompanied by their parent / carer

Age Profile:

1 & 2 years old

Couse Duration:

Bi-Monthly sessions during school term time, with an individual review appointment offered following an 8 – 10-week break

Facilitated by:

Two Speech & Language Therapists

Aim:

To focus on practical strategies for supporting early interaction skills together with early speech and language skills

Outcomes:

Parents taught core strategies for supporting:

  • Early attention and listening skills
  • Interaction skills
  • First words/signs and sounds
  • Improved early attention & listening skills
  • Production of early speech sounds
  • Use first words and/or Lámh signs

Cost: €15 per 45 minute session

Narrative (Let’s Talk) Group

Participants:

6 children

Age Profile:

9 to 12 years old

Course Duration:

Bi-Monthly sessions during school term time

Facilitated by:

Two Speech & Language Therapists

Aim:

To improve and enhance the language skills and conversations skills required for telling stories or relaying information

Outcomes:

  • Improved auditory memory and recall skills
  • Improved active listening skills
  • Improved sequencing skills
  • Enhanced question asking skills
  • Developed story telling skills

Cost: €15 per 45 minute session

Handwriting Group

Participants:

3 children / young people

Age Profile:

School age children / young people

Course Duration:

Bi-Monthly sessions during school term time

Facilitated by:

Occupational Therapist

Aim:

To assess and improve pencil grip and posture together with improving hand strength, manipulation and the underlying visual perception skills needed for legible handwriting.

Outcomes:

  • Improved writing skills
  • Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
  • New friendships
  • Improved listening skills
  • Improved conversation skills

Cost: €15 per 45 minute session

Teens Group

Participants:

5

Age Profile:

10 to 18 years old – Groups will vary depending on the individual needs and age of the teenagers

Course Duration:

Bi-Monthly sessions during school term time

Facilitated by:

Speech & Language Therapists & Occupational Therapist

Aim:

To develop and enhance essential communication skills and everyday life skills in preparation for leaving school. To improve and develop social skills required to actively and appropriately interact with peers, family and wider community.

Outcomes:

  • Improved communication and interpersonal skills
  • Improved decision making & problem-solving skills
  • Improved self-awareness & empathy towards others
  • Time management skills
  • Improved auditory memory and recall skills
  • Improved active listening skills
  • Improved organising and sequencing skills
  • Enhanced question asking skills
  • Education around activities of daily living e.g. money, calendar skills, health, hygiene etc.
  • Promote independence skills in social settings
  • Developing sense of self and identity in the community

Cost: €15 per 45 minute session

Floor Time Group

Participants:

3 children accompanied by their parent / carer

Age Profile:

18 months – 4 years old

*This group is specifically targeted for children (at their current developmental level) who need support in the area of social engagement, regulation and communication

Course Duration:

Bi-Monthly sessions over school term time

Facilitated by:

Speech & Language Therapists & Occupational Therapist

Aim:

Interdisciplinary approach to develop the relationship between affect, sensory processing, and communication.

Outcomes:

This will be achieved through:

• Providing parents with evidence-based research regarding how to engage their child through play; targeting the 6 levels of social and emotional development as below:

  • Level 1: Shared attention and regulation
  • Level 2: Engagement and Intimacy
  • Level 3: Two-way purposeful communication
  • Level 4: Complex social Problem-Solving
  • Level 5: Symbolic ideation
  • Level 6: Emotional and Logical Reasoning

• Offering a review appointment, to review strengths and needs and offer ideas for using at home.
