New Family Support Group

This is a new and ideal opportunity for a group of 8 – 10 parents to come together and have the chance to discuss and share common worries and anxieties, associated with raising a child with Down syndrome in a relaxed, confidential and ‘holding’ environment.

Recent research has shown that parents of children with Down syndrome don’t always feel like they can be open about their struggles, in particular with family or friends. Sometimes parents feel like they have to put on a brave face and to act like everything is under control, when in fact they are in need of support. This same research has shown that the vast majority of parents find great comfort and relief from talking to like-minded individuals who really understand what they are going through.

Therefore, the aim of this group is to provide an opportunity for such parents to meet in a relaxed, confidential and supportive environment. Parents will have the opportunity to discuss a wide variety of issues that they might not otherwise share with family and/or friends.

Suitable for:

Parents of children with Down syndrome in the 0 – 24 month age group.

This group is open to both individuals and/or couples. However due to the nature of this group and the sensitivity that may be required, we ask that participants would try to commit to attending all 6 sessions where possible.

Jackie Ryan is a qualified psychotherapist and mother of an 8 yr old boy with Down syndrome, who has a strong  understanding of the emotions and issues parents can cross in the early years of their child’s development.
